A new kind of anti-aging treatment that plumps up the skin by injections of ones own fibroblasts has been granted a licence by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The new drug, laViv, has been proven to improve the appearance of smile lines and doesn’t paralyse the face like Botox does.

According to the Sunday Times, the treatment has a genuine biological effect on anti-aging, reports the Daily Mail.

The procedure involves the injection of the body”s own cells to smooth the skin.

Cells called fibroblasts are removed from behind the patients ear.

They are cultured for 90 days, producing tens of millions of new cells before being re-injected into the patient during three separate sessions, once every five weeks.

Common side effects include redness, bruising, bleeding, swelling, and pain at the sites of injection.

Experts believe LaViv will challenge Botox in the anti-aging industry.

Chris Mason, professor of regenerative medicine at University College London, said it would “blow Botox out of the water because it will be so much better”.

But Stacey Smith, associate professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Diego who worked on the trial, said people wanting instant results should stick with Botox.
